Understanding Compression Modes

PDF files are often larger than necessary because they embed high-resolution images, unused fonts, and redundant metadata. PrivacyPDF targets these inefficiencies without altering the text or layout of your document.

Light Mode

Best for documents where visual quality is critical — presentations with charts, design portfolios, or official reports. Light mode applies mild image compression and removes only redundant metadata, typically reducing file size by 20-40% with no visible quality loss.

Balanced Mode

The recommended default for most use cases. Balanced mode applies moderate image resampling, removes embedded font subsets that are not used, and compresses object streams. Expect 40-60% size reduction while maintaining excellent readability on screen and in print.

Extreme Mode

When file size is the top priority — email attachments, web uploads with strict limits, or archival storage. Extreme mode aggressively resamples images, removes all unused resources, and applies maximum compression. Size reduction of 60-85% is common, though very image-heavy documents may show slight quality reduction.
